Rising Government Initiatives to Encourage Adoption of EVs Fuel Electric Scooters and Motorcycles Industry Based in Europe

The Europe-based electric scooters and motorcycles industry is projected to rise in the coming years. It is led by rising traffic concerns in European countries, and government initiatives to curb GHG emissions and encourage the adoption of electric vehicles.

Under the product, the scooter category is projected to boost the electric scooters and motorcycles industry in Europe in the near future. These electric vehicles are easy to ride, lightweight, practical, and faster than cars in several cases, including congested traffic.

Moreover, the electric scooters cost is lesser than the cost of electric motorcycles, and cars.

Under the power segment, electric scooters and motorcycles with a motor power capacity of 1.5-5 kW lead the industry. It is projected to follow the same trend in the coming years.

Under the voltage segment, the 72 V battery category is projected to experience the fastest growth in the near future. It is ascribed to rising consumer inclination toward 72-V batteries with an increasing preference for high-speed vehicles.

Under the cooling systems segment, electric motorcycles and scooters with natural convection cooling systems are projected to capture the largest industry share, in the coming years.

Under the maximum speed segment, the >80km/h category is projected to experience the fastest growth in the electric scooters and motorcycles industry in the coming years, ascribed to the rising traction of high-speed vehicles in regional countries due to a decrease in travel time during office hours.

Motorcycles and electric scooters with more than 4 hours capture the largest industry share, in terms of volume and value. In addition, it is projected to experience the fastest growth in the coming years, in terms of value. It is ascribed to their rising demand due to shorter charging time.

Electric scooters and motorcycles with more than 2kW battery capacity capture the massive industry share. In the coming years, electric scooters and motorcycles with 2 to 2.5 kWh battery capacity are projected to experience the fastest growth, in terms of volume in the near future.

Growth of Sharing Services To Drive Europe Electric Scooters and Motorcycles Market

A number of growth factors, such as the proliferation of electric two-wheelers in sharing services, rise in the traffic concerns in the region, focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and implementation of stringent emission regulations, are expected to propel the European electric scooters and motorcycles market at a CAGR of 27.6% during the forecast period (2020–2025). According to P&S Intelligence, the market generated $284.2 million in 2019,which is projected to reach $758.5 million by 2025.

The European electric scooters and motorcycles market growth is driven by the proliferation of electric scooters in sharing fleets in major European countries. This is due to the presence of several sharing service providers, with a large number of electric scooters in their fleets. For instance, France had around 2,560 electric scooters and Italy had about 1,225 scooters in their sharing fleets in 2019, which are expected to grow in the coming years. Thus, the increasing deployment of electric scooters for sharing services plays a pivotal role in the market growth.

At the country level, France held the largest share in the European electric scooters and motorcycles market in 2019, on account of the increasing demand for EVs in the country and the rising number of government initiatives, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. On the other hand, the market in Spain is projected to record the fastest growth during the forecast period. This can be attributed to the surging demand for electric two-wheelers in the country and government initiatives to draw consumers’ attention toward electric variants from conventional vehicles.

Thus, the induction of electric scooters into sharing fleets and the rising focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissionswill accelerate the market growth in the foreseeable future.

Electric Bike and Scooter Market Trending in Europe Region

The European electric scooters and motorcycles market is expected to reach $892.4 million by 2025, with a CAGR of 26.2% during the forecast period, according to P&S Intelligence.

The major driving factors for the growth of the market are deployment of electric scooters for sharing services, rising concerns over greenhouse gas emissions, government initiatives, and implementation of stringent emission regulations.

The rising concerns over greenhouse gas emissions coupled with introduction of several government initiatives is a major factor for the growth of the European electric scooters and motorcycles market. Accelerating rate of environmental degradation caused by greenhouse gas emissions has become a major concern for governments across the world. This has resulted in various government initiatives to reduce carbon emissions on a large scale.

For instance, the Italian government has recently enacted a legislation to provide subsidies on electric scooter purchases, and the scheme is valid through 2019. The government has allocated $11.34 million (EUR 10 million) to support the scheme. Thus, such initiatives by the government to increase the adoption of electric vehicles as an effort to reduce carbon emissions are driving the European electric scooters and motorcycles market.
Implementation of stringent emission regulations acting as a major driverIncreased demand for high-powered electric motorcycles is a key trend witnessed in the market
The demand for high-powered electric motorcycles is increasing in the European countries. Due to their higher power levels, electric motorcycles witnessed over 100% increase in their sales in 2018, from the preceding year. Many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of conventional gasoline-based vehicles have announced their plans of introducing high-powered electric motorcycles in the near future. Thus, the increasing demand for electric motorcycles with high-power engine is one of the key trends observed in the European electric scooters and motorcycles market.

France was the largest electric scooters and motorcycles market in 2018
France held the largest share in the European electric scooters and motorcycles market during the historical period, accounting for over 25% sales volume in 2018. However, Spain is expected to be the largest market for electric scooters and motorcycles in Europe during the forecast period. This is due to the fact that introduction of scooter sharing business is getting popular in major cities of the country and many new players have started their operation in Barcelona as the scooter culture is vibrant in the city.

Some of the major players operating in the European electric scooters and motorcycles market are GOVECS AG, Gogoro Inc., TORROT ELECTRIC EUROPA S.A., Kwang Yang Motor Co. Ltd., unu GmbH, BMW AG, Niu Technologies, Askoll EVA SpA, Zero Motorcycles Inc., Lightning Motors Corp., Alta Motors, Scutum Logistic S.L., emco electroroller GmbH, ETRIX AG, and Piaggio & C. SpA.
